Click and drag the blue dot to transition the image below from a map of local Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANCs) to a map of local Police Service Areas (PSAs).
DC is a jumble of wards, districts-within-a-district, and other enumerated areas and sectors across agencies and departments that overlap and intersect, so I created the map above to give myself a better sense of how some of these areas overlap--and to help connect the people who live in and oversee these areas.
Our neighborhood on Valley Terrace SE appears to be in the 7th Police District (7D), Sector 2, Police Service Area (PSA) 704. PSA 702 is just up Southern Avenue on the other side of Suitland Parkway. You can find more info, maps, and rosters online here, including the contact information for our 7D Watch Commander.
It's worth noting these PSAs cover different areas than our Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 8E and Single Member District (SMD) 05 represented by Commissioner Hudson. Her/our SMD 8E05 includes areas of PSAs 704 and 706. ANC 8E as a whole includes areas of PSAs 704, 705, and 706. Our PSA 704 also appears to include areas of ANC 8B--notably SMDs 8B06 and 8B07. You can view maps of the ANCs and learn more about the commissions online here.
Each PSA is headed by a lieutenant who is overseen by a captain in charge of multiple PSAs, each ANC consists of multiple SMDs represented by Commissioners like Shaquan, and their geographical boundaries all overlap. That seems convoluted to me, and I doubt it makes anyone's job easier. Our location as a bit of an island along Southern Avenue probably doesn’t help either. Captain Bryant, for example, who has attended some of our neighborhood meetings, actually seems to cover Sector 3, which is pretty much everything southwest of us.
I look forward to learning more and adding to this page in the future.
Also, if the tool above doesn't work, hopefully the gif below loads just fine for you.
